"Mexican Flu" for me…I don’t eat pork

with one comment

The Religion Clause blog reports that Israeli Deputy Health Minister Yakov Litzman “is suggesting that the disease be called ‘Mexican flu’ because of Jewish and Muslim sensitivities over pork products.” The suggestion seems to be that Mexicans won’t mind, as they are quite used to connotations with disease and pestilence; better to associate the deadly virus with them than discomfort folks who’d rather not hear about icky pigs.

  1. Agreed…and well said! Let me add also that not only was this absolutely insane and racist, but it also seems to make little sense even from a dogmatic standpoint for the pig avoiders. I mean, if I were Jewish or Muslim, I’d probably WANT to point out and make an extra effort to advertise the disease as originating from pigs, just to further the case for its (supposed) divinely prescribed taboo and filthiness.
